The coffee shop and café situated in Kololo was created by renovating and extending a small 24sqm two-room guardhouse. The new café comprises a kitchen, storage area, office, café, coffee shop, two large storage spaces, a set of family-friendly toilets, and an outdoor playground.
During the renovation, bricks from the site (an old car garage) were reused in constructing the café extension and the toilets. The roof was also extended to create an indoor café area that can be opened to the surrounding gardens. All the outdoor walls consist of casement windows that open outwards, allowing for cross-ventilation while providing protection from rain.
The café area features wooden counters and seating areas built by master carpenter Laurence, using local Mugavu wood. The floor is in polished concrete, with a Mugavu and brass star embedded within, which was developed in collaboration with sculpture artist Emanuel Lwamala. The area also boasts a double-pitched ceiling and crossed wooden trusses.
The toilets are located in a nook between an indoor playground and the boundary wall. They are handicapped-accessible and designed to be family and children-friendly. All indoor and outdoor furniture was designed and built by Creative Assemblages, with their main artisans and carpenters. They are especially proud of their hanging rotating tables and benches.
